Overview
The skid plate shields the underside of the car from rocks and impacts. I built it as a three-piece Carbon-Kevlar sandwich over a lightweight Rohacell core; the Kevlar adds impact toughness and damage tolerance while the carbon provides stiffness.
I manufactured the parts using vacuum infusion, which yields a high, consistent fiber-volume fraction and a clean single-shot cure. The finished assembly came out 43% lighter than the aluminum equivalent and survived the full event with no structural damage, contributing to a 6th overall finish at Baja SAE Arizona 2025.
Highlights
- Carbon-Kevlar hybrid skins for impact tolerance
